Aspiring and early-career personal trainers, gym-floor coaches, and anyone coaching general population clients who wants a properly structured foundation before working with real clients.

What you'll learn

  • Explain the ethical and professional boundaries of the personal training role, including where it ends and allied health/medical scope begins.
  • Conduct a pre-participation health screen and obtain properly informed consent before training a new client.
  • Perform a needs analysis and translate it into specific, measurable client goals.
  • Apply the core principles of training adaptation (overload, specificity, individuality, reversibility, variation) to real programming decisions.
  • Teach and correct exercise technique using clear demonstration, cueing and feedback.
  • Structure a training session and a weekly split using sound programming variables (sets, reps, rest, tempo).
  • Track client progress meaningfully and know when and how to adjust a programme.
  • Communicate with clients in a way that supports adherence and behaviour change, without overstepping scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior qualification to take this course?

No formal prerequisite is required. Basic familiarity with gym equipment and exercise terminology is helpful but not required — the course is built to take you from foundational concepts through to a full, applied understanding of personal training practice.

How long does the course take to complete?

Most learners complete it in around 18 hours of study, spread across the 9 modules at your own pace. There is no fixed deadline — you keep access to the course content, manual, and quizzes for as long as your enrolment is active.

Is this an accredited qualification?

This is a Fitness by Freddy Academy certificate course reflecting Coach Freddy's own coaching standards and industry-standard references (NASM, ACE, NSCA, ACSM). It is not currently accredited by a South African statutory body such as SETA or HPCSA — if you need a statutorily accredited qualification for regulatory or employment purposes, please confirm your specific requirement with the relevant body before enrolling.

How is the course assessed?

Each module has its own short quiz to check understanding as you go. The course concludes with a final certification exam combining multiple-choice, multiple-answer, scenario, short-answer, and case-study questions, plus a practical assignment marked personally by Coach Freddy against a published rubric.

What happens if I fail the final exam?

You get one free retake at no extra cost. If you don't pass on the second attempt, you'll need Coach Freddy's approval before trying again — this is a deliberate check to make sure repeated attempts reflect real additional preparation, not just guesswork.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. Once you pass the final exam and your practical assignment is marked as satisfactory, Coach Freddy issues a personalised, watermarked PDF certificate with your name and a unique certificate number, available for download from your Academy dashboard.

Can I ask questions while I'm working through the course?

Yes — the course includes access to the Academy AI Learning Assistant for quick clarifying questions as you study, and you can always reach out to Coach Freddy directly for anything that needs a human answer, particularly around scope-of-practice judgment calls.

Do I get a downloadable manual, or is everything only online?

You get both. All content is available online through the lesson viewer, and you can also download a full branded course manual covering the entire syllabus as a PDF, so you can study offline or keep a permanent reference copy.
